EWR to JFK: Transfer Options, Cost and Connection Time

To transfer from Newark Liberty (EWR) to JFK, choose a road transfer or a rail journey with changes in Manhattan and Queens. There is no single through train connecting the terminals. A prebooked car reduces transfers; rail avoids much of the road traffic but requires you to move your luggage between services.
For a flight connection, the drive is only part of the calculation. Include leaving the first airport, collecting bags, any entry procedures, reaching the next terminal and meeting the departing airline’s check-in and security requirements. The same principle applies in reverse, from JFK to EWR.
Routes, published fare information and airport notices checked October 26, 2026. Times below are local New York/New Jersey time. Recheck operators and flight requirements before travel.
EWR to JFK travel time: the drive vs. the connection
The airport’s between-airports guide publishes a 60–100-minute estimate for taxi and shuttle travel between JFK and EWR. Treat it as a road-transfer reference, not a guaranteed journey time or a sufficient flight connection. Congestion, construction, waiting and terminal access can change the result.
Keep three different times separate: your flight’s scheduled arrival, the moment you are ready to leave the terminal, and the deadline for reaching the next airport. A car booked against a landing time still needs a clear passenger-ready update.

Arrival, transfer and departure each need time in the plan. Complete any required entry procedures and baggage collection before starting the airport transfer.
A worked example: why six hours is not automatically a safe connection
Suppose two flights are scheduled six hours apart. For this arithmetic example only, allow 75 minutes to leave the arrival airport, three hours at the departure airport and 45 minutes of contingency. Those assumptions leave just 60 minutes for the transfer itself: 360 − 75 − 180 − 45.
That is not a forecast of immigration, baggage or security waits. It shows why a long-looking gap can shrink quickly. Replace every allowance with requirements appropriate to your flights, passengers and travel date; a different airline may recommend a different airport arrival time. If the remaining time cannot accommodate the trip, ask about a later flight or an overnight stay before committing to the itinerary.
Compare car service, taxi, shuttle and rail
EWR–JFK transfer options: compare the whole journey
Option | Cost basis | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Prearranged private car | Quote for the vehicle and agreed itinerary; confirm included charges. | Fewer luggage handoffs and an agreed booking contact, but road conditions still matter. |
Taxi | Confirm the fare and applicable tolls or surcharges for the inter-airport trip. | Official airport queue; vehicle availability and loading time vary. |
Ride app | Live price for the requested trip and vehicle category. | Convenient after arrival; check pickup location, capacity and current availability. |
Booked shuttle or van | Seat-based or vehicle-based quote, depending on the service. | Confirm direct service, shared stops, operating hours and luggage allowance. |
AirTrain + NJ TRANSIT + LIRR | Separate rail components per traveler; see the fare example below. | Several changes with luggage; less exposure to highway traffic. |
For a taxi, the airport guide currently gives an estimated $160 JFK–EWR fare, with possible additional tolls and surcharges. This is neither a CoreCar quote nor a fixed fare for every direction and circumstance. A Manhattan taxi flat fare should not be applied to an airport-to-airport journey.
Before booking a shuttle, check the actual date, direction, terminal instructions and departure policy. The airport lists shuttle options, but a provider’s presence on that list does not prove a seat or nonstop departure is available when your flight lands. Use the operator’s booking service to check the specific trip rather than relying on an old blog price or frequency.
EWR to JFK by train: use New York Penn, not Newark Penn
The usual rail sequence is:
EWR terminal to Newark Airport Rail Station. Use the airport connection appropriate to your terminal and current service notices.
NJ TRANSIT to New York Penn Station. This is the Manhattan station for the next leg, not Newark Penn Station in New Jersey.
LIRR from New York Penn to Jamaica. Follow the LIRR departure information and confirm the train stops at Jamaica.
JFK AirTrain from Jamaica to your departure terminal. Recheck the airline’s actual terminal before boarding.
NJ TRANSIT’s EWR guide describes the airport rail connection and notes that a ticket to or from the airport includes the EWR AirTrain access fee. Buy the correct airport ticket; do not add the same access fee again when comparing costs.
Terminal A needs an extra connection. The EWR AirTrain page says it does not connect directly inside Terminal A: plan for the covered walk or free shuttle. Allow for station navigation, platform waiting and luggage at each change, not just the time aboard trains. Check a date-specific itinerary in NJ TRANSIT and TrainTime; a sum of ride times omits transfers and service gaps.
What does the rail option cost?
As a fare illustration, NJ TRANSIT’s EWR guide currently displays $17.25 for an adult trip to New York Penn, including EWR AirTrain access. The JFK public transportation page lists LIRR CityTicket at $5.25 off-peak or $7.25 peak and JFK AirTrain at $8.75.
Adding those displayed components gives $31.25 off-peak or $33.25 peak per adult. This is a dated calculation, not a guaranteed through fare. Check the actual NJ TRANSIT fare and MTA/TrainTime ticket conditions for your train before buying. Discounts, fare updates and onboard charges can alter what you pay.
JFK to EWR: reverse the route and recheck pickup
For rail, take JFK AirTrain to Jamaica, LIRR to New York Penn, NJ TRANSIT to Newark Airport Rail Station, then the airport connection to your EWR departure terminal. Do not select Grand Central as the Manhattan endpoint for this Penn Station interchange.
For a car, give the provider both flight numbers and terminals. An international JFK arrival can require entry procedures before you collect the ride. The departing airline and terminal at EWR matter just as much as the arrival terminal at JFK.
JFK T5 and T7 have a separate car-service pickup arrangement. The airport’s relocation notice directs arriving for-hire and car-service passengers to the Howard Beach pickup lot, normally reached by a free AirTrain transfer. Departure drop-offs remain at the terminal. Confirm current instructions and any accessibility arrangements; do not copy T5 instructions to T4 or T8.
For the terminal-specific details, see our JetBlue/JFK guide and United/Newark guide. These help identify the actual meeting and departure requirements without treating an airline name as a complete transport instruction.
Construction notices that affect late-October rail transfers
Temporary notices checked October 26, 2026
Notice | What changes |
|---|---|
EWR, weekdays through Nov. 13, 5 a.m.–3 p.m. | AirTrain does not serve Newark Airport Train Station. Airport-to-rail passengers transfer to a free bus at P4; rail-to-airport passengers use a free bus to the terminal. The airport advises an extra 10–15 minutes. |
JFK, Oct. 27, 10 p.m.–Oct. 28, 6 a.m. | No AirTrain between Howard Beach, Lefferts Boulevard and airline terminals. Free replacement buses also serve terminal transfers. |
JFK, Oct. 28, 10 p.m.–Oct. 29, 6 a.m. | No AirTrain between Jamaica and Federal Circle. Free buses replace this segment. |
Check the live EWR partial-outage notice and JFK overnight maintenance notice before travel. These are specific rail-service changes, not a closure of either airport. After the stated dates, confirm whether normal service has resumed rather than assuming the notice continues.
What an executive assistant should confirm before booking
Both flights: date, operating carrier, airport and actual terminal.
Arrival process: domestic, precleared or subject to U.S. entry procedures; checked bags and assistance needs.
Departure requirements: airline arrival recommendation, document checks and bag-drop deadline.
The group: number of travelers, suitcase sizes, one mobile contact and a plan for delayed bags.
The quote: tolls, parking, waiting terms, extra stops, cancellation conditions and suitable vehicle capacity.
If flights are on separate tickets, ask the airlines what happens if the first flight is late. Do not assume a car reservation or a baggage tag protects the onward booking. When changing airports, expect to collect bags and complete the next airline’s check-in process.
“Transfer: [EWR terminal] to [JFK terminal], [date]. Arriving flight: [number]. Departing flight: [number and time]. Party: [number]; luggage: [details]. Please confirm the meeting point, included charges and waiting terms. We will update you after arrival procedures and baggage collection.”
CoreCar can be considered for the road portion when a single vehicle and coordinated handoff suit the itinerary. Review our airport transfer information and include both flights when you request a quote. The booking should fit the connection plan, including a realistic response if the first flight is delayed.
EWR to JFK transfer FAQs
Is there a direct train from EWR to JFK?
There is no single through train between the airport terminals. The usual rail route combines the airport connections, NJ TRANSIT and LIRR, changing at New York Penn and Jamaica.
Is there a free shuttle between Newark and JFK?
The airports’ free internal shuttles do not create a free inter-airport service. A booked airport-to-airport shuttle is a separate service; confirm its fare and availability.
Is a three-hour EWR–JFK layover enough?
Do not treat three hours as a dependable airport-change allowance. Subtract arrival processing and the next airline’s airport arrival requirement before considering transport. Ask the airline to review the specific itinerary.
Does checked luggage transfer automatically between the airports?
Plan to collect and carry your bags between airports, then check them with the departing airline. Confirm the baggage arrangements attached to your tickets.
Which Penn Station do I use for the LIRR connection?
New York Penn Station in Manhattan. Newark Penn Station is a different station in New Jersey and is not the interchange described in this route.
